To what extent do you agree or disagree? (Structure A)

In some countries an increasing number of people are suffering from health problems as a result of eating too much fast food. It is, therefore, necessary for governments to impose a higher tax on this kind of food. [Statement]

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

In a number of countries, high levels of fast food consumption are causing health problems in the population. It has therefore been suggested that the government introduce a tax on this kind of food to help tackle the problem. I agree with the idea of imposing a tax on fast food for reasons that will be explored in this essay.

The main reason why I agree is that a tax on fast food would make it more expensive, which would encourage people to adopt a healthier diet. Many people go to places like McDonalds and KFC because they are cheaper than healthier alternatives like Whole Foods. If a meal at McDonalds cost the same as a meal at a healthy restaurant, many people would choose the healthy option. Even though this may not be the case for every individual, it would certainly help to improve the general health of the population.

Many people suggest that the government should not impose this kind of tax because fast food companies would make less money, which would have a detrimental effect on the economy. While this may be true, I think raising taxes on fast food could also have some positive economic consequences. For example, government spending on public healthcare would probably go down, because less people would have health problems related to eating fast food. The government could then invest this extra money in infrastructure, which would boost economic growth.

In conclusion, I think a tax on fast food would be a good idea because the increase in price on such food would encourage people to adopt a healthier diet, and the government would also have more money to spend in areas other than healthcare.

Causes and solutions (Structure B)

In some countries the average weight of people is increasing and their levels of health and fitness are decreasing. [Statement]

Why is this happening and what can be done to solve the problem? [Question/instructions]

In many countries people’s general level of fitness is declining while the average weight of the population in on the rise. There are certain reasons for this deterioration in health, as well as some specific solutions that could help solve the problem, as will be explored in this essay.

The main reason why the population is generally becoming more unhealthy is that the vast majority of people now have sedentary jobs and spend most of the day sitting at desks in offices. Not only does this mean they get practically no exercise during their workday, but it also means they have no energy or motivation to exercise when their workday is over. This is because when people are inactive for a long time, they actually lose energy and the motivation necessary to do exercise.

One of the best solutions for solving this problem would be for employers to provide exercise rooms and shower facilities at work. This would encourage workers to get some exercise during their lunch break, or immediately before or after work. Companies’ could also organize yoga classes or games such as football for their workers. The government could encourage this tendency by offering incentives such as tax breaks for employers who introduce these kinds of facilities. It is likely that games and exercise rooms at work would also increase morale and productivity in the workplace.

In conclusion, the fact that so many people now work in offices is among the main reasons for the declining health of the population. Employers could help solve this problem by providing facilities for their employees to exercise before, during or after work.
